We came here because my best friend wanted to try something different and from the various reviews, this place seemed very different and special.
First impression, it was a very classy and beautiful restaurant with a great ambience. It felt as though we were in an avant garde minimalist garden. The staff were friendly and were able to find us a table even though we did not have a reservation. We were first offered bar seats but we were soon shifted to a table as soon as it was available. Then, we kind of felt it was getting warm at the table. We told the waiter about it and he managed to shift us further into the restaurant where it seemed just a tad cooler.
The Spicy Oriental Bolognaise was an interesting fushion. The sichuan flavours definitely came out stronger as the spices were inevitably more distinct. The angel hair pasta was a good pairing as the angel hair was thin and overall, the dish was light and enjoyable.
I do enjoy duck confit and opted for the “Xiang Su” duck. The presentation of the plate was colourful and well balanced. The duck breast and leg was quite dry. I felt it could have been pan-fried less. However, the item that stole the show was the potato puree which was soft, velvety and well-seasoned.
This was definitely an interesting take on salmon. The salmon tartare came in a bowl atop some dry ice, which added to its presentation. The tartare tasted very fresh and the sichuan pepper gave it a kick. There were three pieces of smooth cured salmon and rounded up the dish well. If you’re used to feeling heavy after a meal, then this certainly won’t fill you.
Being a coffee lover (or at least she is), we ordered the GWC (GoodWoodCoffee) Coffee Dessert. When it came, it looked as the ice cream was floating in a bunch of clouds owing to the white cotton candy around it. The waiter then proceeded to pour coffee over the dessert. This then exposed the underlying surprise which was the chocolate brownie. We really did want to love this dessert but the only thing we enjoyed about it was the coffee as the brownie was a tad dry.
The food was quite special and it was definitely presented very differently. We enjoyed most of the dishes. I think this is a perfect place to bring a date but they really need to sort the air-conditioning because it was just at the brink of getting uncomfortably warm.
