Guzman Y Gomez mexican food @ Asia Square

01.17.2018 by lepetitbaker // Leave a Comment

One word… Disappointed… We were here on a Monday at 2.30pm and were looking forward to some awesome nachos and what we received was quite upsetting. My friend suggested we visit this place as she remembered how fresh and tasty it was in Melbourne.

Unfortunately, the nachos were cold and mildly soft, the “melted” cheese was cold and hard, the grilled chicken was cold and sad. Well, the chicken did taste good but it should have been cooked fresh. The guacamole was on point though, fresh and rich. We did try 2 of their sauces which I thoroughly enjoyed, hot habenaro and smoked chipotle.

If any of you have tried Chic-a-boo, you would have to wait for at least 10 to 20 minutes even if you are the only customer. Reason being, every order is taken seriously and made fresh for each customer.

As for the mexican food, I understand that the lunch crowd may no longer be here. However, they should still prepare new batches for new customers instead of the cold, dry ones left on the counters for the lunch crowd before. I do hope that they would choose to serve the food fresh as this would certainly please the stomachs of future customers.

Popiah and local desserts @ 928 Yishun Central

01.08.2018 by lepetitbaker // Leave a Comment

When I was in Secondary School, my standard lunch meal would consist of laksa, popiah, and ice jelly. Sometimes with a soft drink as well, but now that I am older, I can’t seem to eat as much, which is not necessarily bad thing.

This dessert stall and popiah stall is right beside the laksa stall. They used to share the same area but I think they once had a conflict and separated from one another. However, you can now buy food from any of these 3 stalls and sit at any of the tables they have.

So after laksa, we decided to share a popiah and a bowl of ice jelly, you know, just to re-live my old days.

For those who do not know, popiah is a dish made from popiah skin, soft-braised turnips and some other condiments like chilli paste, sweet sauce, hard-boiled eggs, prawns, beansprouts, and peanuts. Popiah skin itself is a thin crepe-like skin made from wheat flour. Again, I have tried quite a few popiahs and none of them tastes like this one in Yishun.

As for the dessert, it’s nothing special, but it’s good for sure. There is a ton of variety and the price is cheap as well. A perfect end to an indulgent lunch!

Laksa @ 928 Yishun Central

01.07.2018 by lepetitbaker // Leave a Comment

I lived in Yishun for almost 10 years of my life so I was very used to eating all sorts of food in and around Yishun.

After I started trying out food around other areas in Singapore, I realised that I had gotten so used to this distinctive taste of laksa from a eatery in Yishun that no other spot could match up to it!

This laksa store has been in business for a really long time and the price has grown from $2.20 to $2.80. This rise in price of $0.60 is very reasonable for the consistency in taste that has not changed one bit. The serving size looks like what I had 10 years ago and the taste of this dish is exactly the same as when I first had it as a kid.

For $2.80, you get a bowl of noodles with cockles or crabsticks (depending on which you prefer), some fishcake slices, some tau pok and the delectable, creamy, fragrant, and super tasty gravy. They also make this chilli condiment which you can help yourselves to on the side. The chilli compliments the gravy very well and always tastes really fresh.

I am glad they have not changed one bit in terms of taste and quality after so many years. Actually, even the boss who still serves his customers looks the same! Maybe laksa is the secret to eternal beauty and life? Just maybe.
