We reached at about 5.15pm and were told by the waitress that the kitchen only opens at 6pm. So she recommended that we get some drinks. What bothered me was the fact that we waited patiently for the kitchen to open, but when 6pm came, no one took the initiative to take our orders. Just to clarify, we were the only customers there other than a student who was having a drink and doing some work on his laptop. As I’m pretty particular about service, the lack of proactive-ness really made me upset because there was a couple of hungry diners waiting to be served but both the wait staff couldn’t be bothered to take our orders when it was time. We had to ask if it was possible to order.
I was a waiter before and having served customers who arrived early, what I did was to take their orders about 10 minutes before the kitchen opens and inform the customer that the kitchen will prepare it as soon as they are open. I wasn’t taught to do this but as a service-oriented person, I felt the need to take such initiatives to let the customer know I’m thinking about them and to keep them happy even though they are waiting.
Anyway, I ordered duck confit with coffee waffle and I have to say this is the best waffle I have tried in terms of flavour and texture. The duck confit was just so-so, and I didn’t really think it was well done. The texture, flavour and taste was just not right for me.
She ordered the “Hei” Mami Rice which was a tantalizing concoction of squid ink rice with 3 colours of prawn roe. The rice has a crunchy and soft texture which was delicious to bite on. Although she isnt a fan of sous vide egg, it was oozy and didn’t exhude too much of the yolky smell which she was happy about. The steak was well-cooked and had a good bite to it. It was lightly salted and overall, the dish boasted a well balance of textures. She was definitely satisfied after her meal.
We had berry muffcake for dessert. This was beautifully presented and reminded her of the brunches in Melbourne which was great. The colours were well matched. I think the best part was the balance between the sweetness of the ice cream and muffin and the bitterness from the raspberries and blueberries. We did feel that this is a huge portion so it’s best if you ate this on an empty stomach. But then again, we’re small eaters.
She loves mocha and it’s usually the first thing she gravitates to when ordering coffee. The mocha was thick and the coffee was bold. The chocolate blended very well and it’s always beautiful to watch the browns and whites blend into one another as you stir.
